Frida’s Story
A kind-hearted man was driving and saw a dog laying on the side of the road. Thought to be injured, he pulled over to help, but quickly realized that sadly, the dog was already deceased. Shortly after, Frida emerged from the woods covered in porcupine quills around her face and snout. Without hesitation, he brought her to us for help.
Once at the SPCA, our veterinary team carefully removed over 50 painful quills (many of which were embedded in her mouth), providing much-needed relief. To make matters worse, it appears Frida tried to remove the quills herself, resulting in ripped and sore paw pads. Not only was she dealing with quills embedded in her skin, but she also had ticks in her ears. To prevent infection and to help her recover, she was prescribed antibiotics and pain relief medication.
The veterinary team also made sure Frida had the proper nourishment to gain some weight. It was suspected that the quills prevented her from eating for quite some time. Our animal care and behavior teams added in some extra TLC sessions, which helped Frida put this scary ordeal behind her. In record time, Frida spent less than a half hour on the adoption floor and is enjoying life to the fullest with her new family!
