Temporary Pet Care
Sometimes life doesn’t go as expected. House fires, domestic violence, sudden hospitalization, or other emergencies can make caring for a pet nearly impossible. Many pet owners think the only option is to give up their beloved companion. We are here to help you find short-term care for your pet as an alternative to surrendering them to the shelter.
When searching for temporary pet care, your family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers are often the best place to start. And this is often the best option for your pet.
The SPCA Serving Erie County does not offer boarding services. A list of area boarding facilities can be found here.
SAFE (Shelter Animals for Emergencies) Foster Program
If you are facing an emergency and can’t find temporary care on your own, the SPCA’s SAFE (Sheltering Animals for Emergencies) Foster Program may be able to help. A referral from a social services agency is required. To determine eligibility, the agency must contact Placement Coordinator Krissi at (716) 875-7360 ext. 233 or send an email to krissim@yourspca.org.
Situations that MAY qualify:
-Domestic violence
-House fire
-Sudden hospitalization
-Rehabilitation
Disqualifications:
-Non-resident of Erie County
-Evictions
-Homelessness due to evictions/removal from the lease
-Living with friends or family in a hotel, rental space, etc.
All animals considered for the SAFE program must meet general medical and behavioral guidelines before being admitted, including, but not limited to, up-to-date vaccines and being spayed/neutered.
