Marie Gebura: A Life of Compassion, Achievement, and Legacy
Marie Gebura was born on July 14, 1961, the second child of Louis and Dorothy Gebura. From a young age, Marie showed exceptional intelligence, kindness, and a deep love for animals. Growing up in Buffalo, her childhood home was filled with pets—ranging from a Miniature Schnauzer to reptiles—reflecting her lifelong bond with animals.
Marie excelled academically, graduating as Valedictorian from South Park High School in 1979 and earning a BS in Chemistry from the University at Buffalo (UB) in 1983. She went on to pursue a PhD in Chemistry at Penn State University, where she also contributed to animal welfare through her work with “People and Animals Coming Together” (PACT).
Her compassion extended beyond her academic achievements. Marie would often go out of her way to help others, whether it was befriending an elderly gentleman or using her scientific knowledge to assist animals. She also pursued her passion for aviation, earning her pilot’s license and serving as president of the Penn State Flying Lions.
Tragically, on February 22, 1987, at the age of 25, Marie died in a plane crash near State College, Pennsylvania. Her untimely death devastated her family. However, her legacy lives on through her contributions to science and her unwavering commitment to helping others, especially animals.
In 2015, the Marie Gebura Caring Heart Fund was established in her memory, continuing her mission of supporting animals in need. Through this fund, Marie’s spirit of compassion and dedication lives on, helping pets whose owners can’t afford life-saving care.
