Not every animal comes to the SPCA Serving Erie County healthy and adoptable. Countless animals like LuLu suffer from life-threatening illnesses and injuries, usually the result of abuse and neglect. They require immediate, and expensive, veterinary care that often stretches our resources. Once treatment is administered, many require additional medical care or intense socialization and behavior modification.
LuLu, a 4-year-old Shih Tzu, came into our care in extremely poor condition after being found by a good Samaritan. She was lethargic, underweight, and so severely matted that it took three staff members 2.5 hours to remove 1.2 pounds of hair. Our team discovered her left front leg had an injury causing her paw to be swollen and her left hind leg had muscle atrophy and no Achilles tendon. After trimming her overgrown nails, she was scheduled for surgery and a dental session.
LuLu was placed with a foster family to regain weight and monitor the recovery of her injured legs. After a few weeks, her front leg had made great progress, but unfortunately, she was still struggling with the hind leg and the decision was made to amputate. LuLu would not let anything hold her back from her second chance. The sweet gal made a full recovery and was adopted within hours of being placed on the adoption floor!
The SPCA’s Yelp for Help Fund offsets the cost of caring for, and eventually making possible successful adoptions of, these special animals. Can you give these animals in need the hope and happiness they deserve? Your gift will truly help to save lives!
